Why have hobbyhorses become so popular?
Playing with hobbyhorses has fascinated children for years – perhaps your grandparents or great-grandparents even had a hobbyhorse as a faithful companion.
But why are hobbyhorses so popular these days? And what can you actually play with a hobbyhorse? We'll find out in this hobby hrse club. So saddle up, grab the reins, and learn more about hobbyhorses!
Hobbyhorses capture children's imaginations and bring joy to movement. Let's explore why they're so beloved and what creative games you can play with them.
it all started in finland
It all started in Finland
Hobby Horse began in Finland and became especially popular and well-known thanks to Selma Vilhunen's funny and moving documentary "Hobbyhorse Revolution." The film follows three teenagers who face prejudice about their passion for hobbyhorses, but refuse to let it discourage them.
Hobbyhorse Revolution is also the name of the Finnish hobbyhorse riding association, which grew rapidly as children and young people read about the phenomenon on discussion forums and later on social media.
Today, thousands of children and young people in Finland own a hobbyhorse, and the country organizes a national hobbyhorse championship and various regional competitions.
And the trend has also spread to New Zealand!
At EquusAmie, we want to make the opportunity to experience the Hobby Horse Sport available and share the joy with whomever wants to join.
Riding a hobbyhorse is fun. It sparks the imagination and is also good for fitness and body awareness. But the hobbyhorse has become especially popular as a sport. The sport is called Hobby Horse, at EquusAmie we gather for joint training sessions, competitions, riding camps, and shows, and they connect on social media or at riding clubs.
Curious about what you can do and play with a hobbyhorse? What's in it for your child if they get a hobbyhorse?
Does your child want a hobbyhorse or participate in Hobby Horse? Then you can rejoice! Your child will get exercise and can be part of a community where new friendships can develop.
It improves gross motor skills, timing, and coordination when your child practices their leg movements and jumps. They might also need to memorize a course so there is a bit of brain training involved as well. Hobby Horse competitions and shows emphasize rhythm, grace, and good footwork, just like in a real horse show or when doing gymnastics or dance.
hobby horse care
The hobbyhorse also needs care, such as brushing and being given a nice name. Perhaps its mane is braided and the horse is given a carrot as a reward. This part of the game strengthens your child's empathy. Perhaps your child pretends that the hobbyhorse is afraid of spiders or has a favorite dressage discipline.

Hobby Horse is a calm pleasure
A hobby horse doesn't spook or become frightened if something dangerous suddenly passes by—unless the rider thinks that's exactly the kind of personality the horse should have.
Trotting, galloping, and jumping on a hobby horse will leave at most a few bruises. Therefore, a Hobby Horse is worth considering as a hobby for your horse-loving child if riding a large, live animal feels a bit too unsafe.
A hobby horse can be dressed up with nice tack, but it does not need food or expensive stables. And you can easily go to horse riding competitions on a hobby horse.
For children with special needs, a hobby horse can be a way to fulfill their dream of riding or having their own horse. It is not the same of course, but the feeling of caring for the horse and possibly building a bond with others through an interest in horses or dressage is very much present with a hobby horse. And is a great way of working up to a real horse as many of the skills/techniques relate to real horseriding.
